Positives: I was able to book an appointment with short notice. Kristie gave a great, professional and well customized massage. I have had many massages and can attest to the fact that Kristie knows what she is doing.

Negatives: when I first walked into the spa, I was greeted with a musty, dank odor. I get it - its a beautiful, old, historic building. But you are a spa - welcome your guests with natural scents such as lavender, vanilla, ginger or eucaplyptus. Something.

What proceeded after was the most bizzare facial experience of my life. Whitney is very nice and I believe really tried to be helpful. She was aware that I was seeing a dermatologist. She asked an extremely long list of detailed questions and wrote down copious notes. Then I was brought to a room for my facial. It was dirty looking with old, almost dusty looking decor. And I could not see any products that would be used.

Whitney disappeared to get a towel wrap for me and a robe for later for me to wear to the massage. There was no locker or storage area - apparently clients tote their bags and clothes around the spa. I was not given any slippers or flip flops and was grossed out that I had to step barefooted on clearly stained carpet. And here is the realy killer: as I pulled the towel wrap around me and began to fasten the velcro close, I saw that the velcro was full of human hair. Classy. But I still tried to remain optimistic.

I got in the bed, all the while wondering if it was clean and grossed out that there was not a top sheet, just the blanket on top (which i am sure given what I have just described is not washed or changed between clients).

Whitney returned and dimmed the lights, fine, but then began more discussion and questions and a lot of comments. What resulted was the strangest, most unpleasant facial I have had. A lot of time went to talking once I was in the bed, and I understand the hand and arm massage. I DO NOT understand why the blanket was lifted off my feet and my feet massaged. I did not hear any running water to indicate the washing of hands after touching my feet. But steam was on my face at the moment, so I thought good things could be to come.

A rough towel - which did not smell clean - was used to scrub my face and decollete so roughly that my chest was red for over an hour afterwards. Everyone understands not to use wash cloths on their faces anymore - why would someone giving a facial literally scrub your face and neck with one? A mask was applied briefly and then removed. There was an odd massaging around my eye area which made me concerned that it would CAUSE wrinkles. My head was massaged briefly with some object that sounded like a dog's chew toy.

After all the overly detailed questions and concerns about what products I use, absolutely NOTHING was told to me about what was being used (the few things) on my face. The plus side to this (if anything) was that there was no pressure to by anything. Anything. I really wonder what was put on my face though!

My feet were left greasy from the "massage". I had to step on the carpet to flounder around for my shoes and stick them in like that since as I already mentioned there were no slippers. I laughed at the bath robe - not terry cloth, but the fuzzy ridiculous looking grandmother variety.

This was a waste of time. And even though I got a special (2 services for $99) this was also over-priced and a waste of money. I just left feeling like a greasy, protective layer had been applied to my face that I needed to go wipe off.

At reception - not sure if it was the owner or staff - they handled the tip procedure very akwardly. There are no envelopes or a place to leave your tip. And though I was horrified by the facial I did tip more than required.

The reason this rating gets 2 stars at all is that the massage was really a 4 star massage. Thank goodness it was after the facial to help relieve some of the stress and shock it produced.

Disappointing for what should have been a well executed, Staunton boutique spa experience. Not sure who the desired client base is, but this place which seems to be so promising left a lot to be desired.

My visits to the salon, either for my hair or for a manicure and pedicure, are the most relaxing hours in my schedule. Love the hot tea!
