I was very disappointed when the vet offered me only one option, a painful surgery for a puppy at a cost from $400 to $500, to care for my dog's cut foot. (Fortunately, I had had prior experience with a similar wound which healed beautifully with daily dressing changes and medication.) Only after I specifically asked if the wound would heal without surgery was the option of medication and dressings admitted to be a a viable alternative. The puppy's cut has healed very well without surgery.
Ebenezer Animal Hospital, PA replied:
We are so glad to hear that your pup's wound has healed nicely! It is always our goal to recommend the best treatment option available for our patients. If this option is not feasible, we certainly have no problems recommending options that will better meet our clients needs. In this case, surgical repair was the best available treatment for optimum healing of your pet's wound. Daily bandage changes can certainly lead to healthy healing but it comes with an increased likelihood of discomfort and possible infection.
Again we are extremely pleased that the wound has healed! Please let us know if we can be of further assistance in anyway.
