I was driving around when my "Service Engine" light flashed and stayed on. I looked online and found Aliso Viejo Auto Service was local to me and it had current reviews that gave them 4 to 5 stars consistently.
I brought my SUV in, and was promptly provided local shuttle service so I wouldn't have to wait at the shop. Within a half hour my SUV's 60,000 mile diagnosis was relayed to me by over the phone by Ralph, providing me options on what was "required now" and what wasn't. I gave the verbal authorization over the phone and moments later received two emails, one with a detail of the "required now" and a separate one for the "later."
A few hours later I received a call that my SUV was ready for pick up, and that a shuttle was on its way to pick me up. Shane (the owner) provided my shuttle back to the shop and had a friendly conversation over the kind of engine my SUV had, versus the previous engine model, and compared other notes on its performance/maintenance. When we arrived at the shop I looked over the itemized bill and Ralph mentioned during the check up my car battery was registering a low reading. However he noticed it had a AAA Warranty on it so he told me to just contact AAA and have them recheck while it's still under warranty, and that I could show the reading that AV Auto Service printed for me.
I find having additional tidbits of knowledge here and there: what caused my sensor to light, what my options were for "now" and "later," what other things covered under another manufacturer's warranty should be taken care of, etc., provides an openness that I appreciate.
I've been to other shops where I don't feel like I got the wool pulled over my eyes, but left with a sense that perhaps I was just a dollar sign to them. There's a difference with:
Scenario A: "...here's my card, and ask for me, since I get rated on my much $ I bring in...
Scenario B: "...perhaps you can refer us to your friends, and when we provide them similar service then ..."
At the end of the day it's all about the dollars (don't get me wrong: a hundred dollar difference in price, is a hundred dollar difference in price!). However, make the consumer feel like they've made an investment in their vehicle, instead of an expense, and that investment will return like a boomerang to the business, in terms of referrals and future visits.
